AMHERST, Mass. - For the first time this season, UMass Skiing will be participating in two Carnivals this weekend. On Saturday, the Minutemen will travel to Lincoln, N.H. to compete in the Giant Slalom at the MIT Carnival before the Slalom event at the UMass Carnival on Sunday at Pat's Peak in Henniker, N.H. Last season, the Men finished second in the Giant Slalom while the Women placed third.

The Minutemen currently sit in third place in the MacConnell Conference standings, and are coming off a first place finish in last weekend's Giant Slalom at the Plymouth St. Carnival. Andrew Hawes (Concord, Mass.) has emerged as the skier to watch for the Minutemen this season after he won his second straight Slalom event last weekend. Hawes finished with a time of 1:26.07 at the Plymouth State Carnival last Saturday. He followed up that performance with a fourth place finish in the Giant Slalom on Sunday (2:02.49). Matthew Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) has also played a key role for the Men this season, skiing to top-five finishes in three out of his last four races. Small placed third in last weekend's Giant Slalom with a time of 2:01.47.

The Minutewomen are fifth in the MacConnell Conference standings, and are looking to climb higher with this weekend's races. The Women finished fourth overall in last weekend's Giant Slalom, led by Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.), who skied to a fourth place finish with a time of 2:06.43. Jamie Taloumis (Chicopee, Mass.) has also been consistent for the Minutewomen, finishing 15th in both races last weekend.
