AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's basketball player Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts last week when UMass went 1-1. It is her conference-leading third such honor this season (11/19, 12/17). The preseason All-Conference second team selection averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and shot a sensational 69.2% from the floor in the Minutewomen's two games. Mills currently ranks third in the A-10 in scoring at 17.4 points per game and third in blocks with 2.36 per game. Her field goal percentage of 54.9% is good for fourth in the conference.
This is the third time Mills has picked up conference honors this season, after receiving the award twice last season. Only one other player has received multiple A-10 Player of the Week awards thus far in 2007-08. Dayton's Nikki Oakland was honored twice, on Dec.3 and Dec. 10.
On Dec. 31 at Providence, Mills scored a game-high 21 points, with 16 of them coming in the second half. She added seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks as the Minutewomen fell, 59-56.
On Jan. 3 vs. Longwood, the senior captain shot 9-for-11 from the field, tying her own mark from the Jacksonville game and teammate Pam Rosanio for best shooting performance in the A-10 this season. She finished the game with 20 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks as the Minutewomen defeated the Lancers, 68-58.
UMass ranks first in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.448) and assists (16.9/game).
The Minutewomen are currently 7-7 on the season and begin conference play on Saturday when they host Rhode Island at the Mullins Center in a 2 p.m. tip-off. UMass is a perfect 6-0 on their home court this season.
