AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Field Hockey's Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) was announced on Tuesday as this fall's first Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week and UMass/Dinn Brothers Athlete of the Week. She will be recognized at Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon at the Campus Center, room 1009 at noon. King receives the honor after totaling nine points on four goals and one assist in a week that saw the Minutewomen go 3-0. Two of King's goals were game-winners in 1-0 games, one of which came in overtime. She has also contributed to a defense that has posted three straight shutouts.
King's terrific week began on Wednesday, August 29 when she scored what proved to be the game-winner off an Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) pass 5:45 into the game. On Saturday, King scored 2:17 seconds into overtime off another Parker feed to break the scoreless tie versus Rutgers. On Sunday, she put up a career-high five points against Harvard. She started off by setting up freshman Katie Kelly's (Dedham, Mass.) first career goal 20:40 into the game. She followed that up with a goal later in the first half and added another with 11:37 left in the second half.
The Minutewomen (3-1) are off the their best start since the 2000 season. That year UMass started 5-1 before finishing with a 19-4 record and an Atlantic 10 Championship. After starting 2007 with a loss at Syracuse, the Minutewomen returned home for back-to-back 1-0 wins at home versus Sacred Heart and Rutgers, the latter coming in overtime. On Sunday, UMass traveled to Harvard and defeated the Crimson 5-0. It was the team's highest scoring output since a 7-0 win at Colgate to start the 2000 season.
