AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's basketball player Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) was named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 17-23. The preseason All-Atlantic 10 second team selection led the Minutewomen to a 68-60 victory over Buffalo on Dec. 22 with 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. She shot 10-for-16 (62.5%) from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. It was the senior captain's third double-double of the season and 12th of her career.
Mills was a third team All-Atlantic 10 selection last season and a second team pick in the preseason this season. She has twice been named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week in 2007-08 (11/19, 12/18) and currently ranks in the top-10 in the conference in scoring (6th), field goal percentage (6th), and blocks (2nd).
Mills currently leads UMass in seven statistical categories: scoring (16.8 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg), blocks (28), field goal percentage (.527), free throw percentage (.913), steals (12), and minutes (33.7).
The Minutewomen are 6-6 this season, including a 5-0 undefeated mark at home, their best start at home since 2002-03. The Minutewomen's win over Buffalo was their 100th victory at the Mullins Center, where they are 100-58 all-time since playing their first game there in 1994.
UMass is back in action on Dec. 31 as they close out 2007 on the road at Providence for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off with the Friars.
