AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's basketball player Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) was named Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts in the Minutewomen's two games last week. The senior forward, who was a preseason second team All-Atlantic 10 selection, averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks and shot 56.5 percent from the field in a week that saw UMass go 1-1. On Tuesday, the Minutewomen lost on the road to Big East foe Villanova, 75-51. On Saturday, UMass won, 59-50, at Wagner for its first road win of the season. Mills, who won the same honor on Nov. 19, shares this week's honor with Charlotte senior guard Sabrina Gregory.
On Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Pavilion in Villanova, Pa., Mills carried the Minutewomen with an 18-point performance on 8-for-10 shooting. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out three assists.
On Saturday's game in Staten Island, Mills poured in 16 points to again lead the Minutewomen, and had nine rebounds for a near-double-double. She was the leader at the defensive end as well, with four blocks and three steals. She went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.
This is Mills' second A-10 Co-Player of the Week honor this season after winning the award twice in 2006-07.
For the season, Mills leads the team with 16.1 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, a .516 field goal percentage, and 26 blocks. The senior captain currently ranks second in the A-10 in blocks, seventh in field goal percentage, and eighth in scoring.
The Minutewomen are currently 5-6 on the season. They return home to the Mullins Center, where they are a perfect 4-0, on Saturday to take on the Buffalo Bulls in a noon tip-off.
