Cross Country Teams Finish Strong At ECAC/IC4A Championships

Bronx, N.Y. - Senior Christina Derosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen in an eighth-place finish in the women's ECAC Championship race, while sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayettville, N.Y.) headed the men's team and led them to a fifth-place finish in the men's IC4A Championship Race Saturday in the Bronx. Members of the men's team also participated in the Coach's Race on Saturday, another of the three races held in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) won the Coach's Race placing first overall and finishing the race in 26 minutes and 29 seconds.

DeRosa placed fifth overall as she led the Minutewomen to the finish line one last time. She finished the race in 18 minutes and nine seconds. Consistent number two runner Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) was the next runner to finish for UMass as she placed 27th and finished the race in 18 minutes and 44 seconds. Freshman Lauren Stocker (Westfield, Mass.), junior Beth Harlow (Melrose, Mass.), and freshman Kristin Darling (Miller Place, N.Y.) rounded out the top-five for the Minutewomen in the Championship event placing 40th, 71st, and 74th respectively.

The men's team improved dramatically from their 11th place finish at this event last year. McCann led the way for the Minutemen placing 12th overall, finishing the race in 25 minutes and 35 seconds. Following just behind McCann was freshman Jeff Hill (Blackstone, Mass.) who placed 15th overall and finished the race in 25 minutes and 35 seconds. Rounding out the top-five for the Minutemen were sophomore Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Fells, N.J.), Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.), and Kris Carle (Jackson, N.J.) finishing 26th, 45th, and 62nd respectively.

The women's team will graduate three seniors, Christin DeRosa, Amber Sayer (Amherst, Mass.), and Taryn Trapp (Nampa, Idaho). The men's team will graduate two runners, Joe Czupryna (Chicopee, Mass.) and Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.).
