AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts field hockey team has received a Division I National Academic Team Award. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association honors all Division I programs with a team GPA of over 3.0. The Minutewomen also had eight student-athletes named to the National Academic Squad. UMass had a 3.257 GPA, just missing the top five nationally. Louisville (3.65), Bucknell (3.45), Robert Morris (3.43), Drexel (3.41) and Yale (3.35) comprise the top five.

Senior Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia), senior Elizabeth Andrews (North Dighton, Mass.), senior Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago), freshman Lauren Gillespie (Casco, Maine), freshman Emily Marble (East Longmeadow, Mass.), freshman Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.), junior Heather Ryan (Lowell, Mass.) and senior Katelyn Woolfrey (Somerset, Mass.) were all honored by the NFHCA.

"I am very proud of the entire team," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea. "This shows the tremendous commitment that they have to academics. We have always had a strong tradition academically and this year's team is no exception. They do an amazing job of being able to balance the rigors of academics with games, practice and all of the travel."

The Minutewomen finished the 2005 season with an 8-13 overall record and advanced to the championship game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
