AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts head field hockey coach Patty Shea has announced the 2006 schedule. The schedule features 10 games homes, all in the final 12 games of the year. The Minutewomen will play four teams from last year's NCAA Tournament field in Richmond, Boston University, Connecticut and California.
"Our 2006 fall schedule allows the program to keep its traditional historic regional competition while branching out of region for other challenging competitive opportunities," said Shea. "We have a great home schedule allowing the program to shine in front of the umass faithful."
The Minutewomen will open up the season with three games in California. UMass will face Stanford to open up the 2006 campaign Aug. 26 and then face Cal on Aug. 27 and Pacific on Aug. 29. The Cal and Pacific games will both be played at Cal in Berkeley, Calif. UMass then returns to the East Coast where it will play road games at Harvard (Sept. 3), Fairfield (Sept. 13), Northeastern (Sept. 16), Boston University (Sept. 17) and Dartmouth (Sept. 20).
The home opener will be Sept. 23 against Connecticut. This begins a string where UMass closes out the season with 10 of 12 games at Garber Field. The Minutewomen will also host Siena (Sept. 26), Syracuse (Sept. 29), Vermont (Oct. 1), Temple (Oct. 6), Saint Joseph's (Oct. 8), Saint Louis (Oct. 13) and Richmond (Oct. 15).
After road contests at West Chester (Oct. 20) and La Salle (Oct. 22), the Minutewomen close out the regular season with home games against New Hampshire (Oct. 25) and Rhode Island (Oct. 28).
The 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship will be held Nov. 3-4 at Richmond. The Spiders have defeated the Minutewomen in the last two A-10 title games.
