AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts has released its 2006 football schedule. The University of Massachusetts plays one of the most competitive schedules once again, as a member of one of the premier Division I-AA football conferences, the Atlantic 10. This will be the final season of the A-10, as all 12 teams will shift to the new Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 2007.
UMass opens its season with the first of six home games with a visit from Colgate on Sept. 2.
The Minutemen then head to 2005 Poinsettia Bowl champion Navy on Sept. 9. It marks the first time the Minutemen and Midshipmen will meet in football. It is the seventh time in the last eight years that UMass will play a Division I-A team. The game will be nationally televised on CSTV.
The team heads to Villanova for a Sept. 16 match-up as the teams meet for the first time in three years. Following an open date on Sept. 23, UMass hosts local foe American International on Sept. 30. That is followed by William & Mary's first visit to McGuirk Stadium since 2001 on Oct. 7.
The Minutemen play Towson for the first time in school history, on the road, on Oct. 14. UMass then plays its final five games against intra-division rivals from the A-10 North, starting with a home game against Rhode Island on Oct. 21. UMass hits the road for games at Northeastern and at 2005 A-10 champion New Hampshire on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, respectively.
UMass wraps up the season with back-to-back home games against Maine on Nov. 11 and Hofstra on Nov. 18. It is the third year in a row UMass finishes its regular-season against the Pride.
"We have another challenging schedule for 2006," said head coach Don Brown, who begins his third season at the helm of UMass this coming fall after a 7-4 record last season. "For the first time in three years we have six home games which is tremendous for our fan base. When you look at the schedule, the fact that when we are trying to define our season we will have a chance to do that at home with the final two games. Also, with the final five games all against our division opponents, we will have the opportunities in our control when it comes to winning the league and making the NCAA playoffs."
All game times and special festivities such as Homecoming, Band Day, Fan Appreciation Day and Hall of Fame Day will be announced at a later date. The schedule is subject to change.
