AMHERST, Mass. - Holly Wiles scored her second goal of the game 5:31 into overtime to give Boston University (4-3) a 2-1 win in overtime over Massachusetts (3-6) Tuesday night in non-conference field hockey action at Garber Field. Sophomore Nicole Phelan (North Andover, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season in the second half to put UMass up 1-0, but the Terriers came back to tie and eventually won the game in overtime.

"Tactically, we did what we wanted to do and executed our game plan," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea. "When we made a mistake, BU capitalized and we could not take advantage when they gave us a break. Just four shots on goal out of 11 total shots is unacceptable. I'll take my team over any team in overtime but we widened the field tonight when we needed to narrow it. If we stayed within our skills then we would have been ok."

Massachusetts had two penalty corners in the game's first two minutes, but we unable to score. Senior Katelyn Woolfrey (Somerset, Mass.) had the first shot which was saved by BU goalkeeper Erin Prediger. Sophomore Kristina DoRosario (Oakville, Ontario) got the rebound in front, but had her shot blocked a defender. BU's first shot came midway through the first half as UMass sophomore goalkeeper Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made a pad save on Sarah Shute. Six minutes later, UMass had another great scoring chance. Sophomore Kara Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) took a long pass from senior Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) on the left side, but her shot went just wide to the right. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, UMass had its best chance to score first. Freshman Lauren Gillespie (Casco, Maine) sprinted down the right sideline and took a pass from freshman Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) who had weaved her way through several defenders. Gillespie tried to slide the ball past Prediger, but it went just wide to the left.

UMass came out strong in the second half and was able to score the game's first goal 4:55 in. Gillespie pushed the ball ahead to freshman Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.). Orlando then led Phelan with a pass to the left side. Phelan slid the ball into the cage and gave the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead. BU turned up the pressure and started to rack up the shots and corners. In the next eight minutes, the Terriers had three corners and six shots. Letourneau stood her ground including a kick save on Shute from point-blank range.

On its third corner, Boston University was able to tie the game. Wiles tipped in a shot by Sarah Hudak to tie the game at one with 23:10 left in regulation. UMass had three more corners in the second half, but was unable to score. With just over seven minutes left, the Terriers had a flurry that saw Letourneau make three saves. Sophomore Erin O'Brien (Annandale, Va.) also saved the day with a defensive save for the Minutewomen. BU's Hayley Hamada had a shot hit the post.

UMass had the first chance with the ball to try and win it in overtime, but could not get a shot off. After a Minutewoman turnover at midfield, BU came down the field with numbers and stepped up the offensive pressure getting a corner. On the first corner, Letourneau made a couple of saves. Woolfrey also had a defensive save, but the Terriers were awarded another corner. Much like her first goal of the game, Wiles tipped in the game-winner from the far post. Colleen McClay was credited with the assist.

BU held a 17-11 advantage in shots. 14 of the Terriers shots were on goal, but UMass had just four shots on goal. The Terriers held a slim 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Letourneau made a career-high 11 saves in the loss, while Prediger had three saves for Boston University.

The Minutewomen will enjoy a couple of days off before returning to action Saturday at Connecticut. Game time in Storrs will be 1:00 PM. Live stats will be available for the game via Gametracker at www.umassathletics.com.
