AMHERST, Mass. -- Northeastern (2-1) scored three first half goals in a 5:29 span to defeat Massachusetts (0-3) 4-1 Friday night at Garber Field in non-conference field hockey action. Senior Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) scored the goal for UMass 3:49 into the start of the second half. Senior Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) tallied the assist on the goal. Sophomore Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made seven saves in the loss.
UMass had the first scoring chance of the game with 28:07 left in the first half. Freshman Mary Shea (Foxboro, Mass.) made a pass to freshman Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.) in the center of the circle, but her shot attempt went just wide. With 19:39 left, Northeastern's Jay Quinn intercepted a pass in the UMass zone and blasted a shot from 20 yards out by Letourneau giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Huskies made it 2-0. Lauren Edelmeier's shot off a penalty corner was tipped in by Sarah Eckhoff in front of the net. Just one minute later, Rachel Wilkes gave Northeastern a 3-0 lead. She broke in alone and was able to slide the ball past Letourneau who had come out of the net to try and cut down the angle.
UMass had several great scoring chances in the rest of the first half, but Northeastern goalkeeper made Liz Centofanti made six saves in the final 15 minutes. With just over 13 minutes left, UMass had consecutive corners, but Centofanti made three saves. Bawden had one of the shots on goal, while junior Kwylan Jaggassar (Longdenville, Trinidad & Tobago) had two. Just before halftime, UMass had two more consecutive penalty corners, but were unable to score. Jaggassar had another shot on goal during the flurry.
UMass came out flying after halftime and was rewarded with a goal just 3:49 into the second half. Bawden took a shot that was saved but got her own rebound. She fed a pass in front of the net to Borneo who stuffed it home for her first goal of the season. A few minutes later, Northeastern had three consecutive penalty corners, but Letourneau stood her ground. She made two saves, while two more shots were blocked by UMass defenders.
With 19:38 left in the second half, UMass had its best chance to make it a one-goal game. Freshman Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) sent a pass to sophomore Racheal Mervine (Conway, Mass.) on the right side of the cage. Mervine tried to one-time the ball home, but her shot went wide. Less than two minutes later, the Huskies added an insurance goal. Edelmeier scored on a penalty corner making it a 4-1 game. The Minutewomen were unable to get anything going the rest of the game as Northeastern killed the clock.
Northeastern out-shot UMass, 18-13, and also held the edge in penalty corners, 9-5. The Huskies had a 6-1 edge in penalty corners in the second half. Letourneau made seven saves in the game, including five in the second half. Centofanti had six saves for the Huskies.
Massachusetts concludes its season-opening, four-game homestand Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen will host Harvard in a 1:00 PM game at Garber Field.
