UMass Field Hockey Falls To Maine, 2-1

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine field hockey team defeated UMass 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Morse Field at Alfond Stadium in Orono, Maine. Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored the game-winner for the Black Bears and also assisted on the first goal of the game for the Black Bears. Maine improves to 5-3 on the season, while UMass falls to 3-5.

The two teams played scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the game. UMass nearly got on the scoreboard nine minutes into the first half, but Maine goalie Maygan Cassarino (Milford, N.H.) made an outstanding save to keep the game scoreless.

UMass opened the scoring when Lauren Gillespie redirected a shot by Erin Parker at 15:50. For Gillespie, it was her first goal of the season.

Maine tied the game at 31:52. Kim MacDonald found Shaunessy Saucier (Old Town, Maine). UMass goalie Becky Letourneau came out to play Saucier and she held the ball and was able to score on shot that went to the far corner of the goal cage. For Saucier, it was her first goal of the season.

The two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.

Maine notched the game-winner at 43:43 when MacDonald scored off a scramble in front of the cage. Both teams were fighting for the ball deep in UMass territory before MacDonald was able to gain control and find the lower corner of the cage. For MacDonald, it was her second goal of the season.

Cassarino played the first half of the game for the Black Bears. She made five saves in the first half. Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) played the second half of the game for the Black Bears. She made two saves and earns the win. She improves to 4-3 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Providence for an 11:00 a.m. game
