AMHERST, Mass. -- Boston College (1-0) used two separate goal spurts of less than three minutes apart to defeat Massachusetts (0-2), 4-2, in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday night at Garber Field. UMass sophomore Kara Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) had a goal and an assist, while senior Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) had two assists. Sophomore Kwylan Jaggassar (longdenville, Trinidad & Tobago) scored the other UMass goal.
UMass scored just 2:51 into the game as Borneo fed a pass through the circle to Murphy on the left-side. Murphy slid her shot past BC goalkeeper Jillian Savoy to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead. The Eagles came right back to tie the game on a penalty corner just over a minute later. Lauren Parks got the goal with assists from Bronwen Kelly and Alyssa Emrick. 43 second slater BC's Crystal Frates scored to go up 2-1.
With just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half, UMass had two consecutive penalty corners, but were unable to get the equalizer. Senior Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) took the initial shot, but it was blocked by a BC defender. The Minutewomen were then awarded another corner, but senior Katelyn Woolfrey (Somerset, Mass.) had her shot saved by Savoy.
UMass had two more great scoring opportunities late in the half. With 2:26 left, a UMass corner resulted in Bawden getting the ball on the left side. She faked a shot and then passed to Murphy down low. Murphy's shot sailed just wide to the right side, but UMass got another penalty corner. The Minutewomen got three shots on goal, but Savoy turned each one aside. After Jaggassar's first shot was saved, Borneo got the ball on the left side with an open net. Just as she shot it, Savoy dove back and used her stick to knock the ball down. Borneo got the ball back, but again Savoy made the save and an Eagle defender was able to clear it.
In the second half, UMass had the first scoring chance and took advantage of it. A penalty corner in the first six minutes resulted in a goal. Borneo sent the initial pass into Murphy. Jaggassar then came up and ripped a shot into the back of the cage. Like the first half, BC came right back. Less than two minutes later, BC's Kristen Madden scored off a broken penalty corner. Three minutes later, Madden scored again on a penalty corner to give BC a 4-2 lead. Emrick and Kelly got the assists again.
UMass had a couple more scoring chances, but were unable to score. BC held the edge in shots, 16-11, and penalty corners, 9-6. UMass sophomore Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made six saves, while BC's Jillian Savoy had seven.
UMass' season-opening, four-game homestand continues Friday night against Northeastern. The Minutewomen and Huskies will play on Garber Field beginning at 7:00 PM.
