PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Massachusetts field hockey team has been picked by the league's coaches to finish second this season in a poll released Tuesday afternoon. The Minutewomen, who advanced to the A-10 title game last season, were picked only behind Richmond. The Spiders have won the conference crown the past three seasons.
The Minutewomen are currently in the middle of preseason camp in preparation for the Fairfield opener this weekend. They return seven starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's team which advanced to the A-10 Championship game.
Massachusetts opens up the season on Saturday, Aug. 27, by hosting Fairfield at Garber Field. The game will begin at 1:00 PM and be broadcast live on the Internet for free beginning at 12:50 PM. Bob Behler and Kristi Stefanoni will have the call. Fans can access the link via www.umassathletics.com.
Temple and Saint Joseph's tied for third place in the poll. They are followed by La Salle, newcomer Saint Louis, West Chester and Rhode Island. The 2005 A-10 Championship will be Nov. 4-5 at Geasey Field on the campus of Temple University.
