RICHMOND, Va. - The 20th-ranked Richmond field hockey team (6-5, 1-0 A-10) scored three goals in a span of less than 10 minutes during the second half to beat Massachusetts (3-9, 0-1), 4-1, Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Senior Patricia Borneo (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago) scored the UMass goal just 1:05 into the start of the second half to tie the game. Sophomore Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) made 12 saves to tie her career-high.
The teams were scoreless for 35 minutes of the first half, but the Spiders were awarded a penalty corner just as the clock expired. Letourneau made the save, but the Spiders were awarded another corner when the UMass defense could not clear the ball. Letourneau made two saves off the second corner, but Richmond's Emma Bradley got the rebound and was able to score. Richmond had a 13-5 advantage in shots for the first half and had six penalty corners. UMass had one corner and all of its shots on goal. Letourneau made eight first-half saves.
The Minutewomen had the ball in the Richmond circle less than a minute into the game. Junior Gina Sanders (Morgan Hill, Calif.) took the first shot, but Richmond's Allie Howard made a defensive save. Senior Kate Woolfrey (Somerset, Mass.) got the rebound on the far side, but her shot was saved. After Letourneau made three saves during two Richmond corners, the Minutewomen broke out the other way. Freshman Mary Shea (Foxboro, Mass.) came down the right side and found freshman Erin Parker (South Deerfield, Mass.) in the circle. Parker's shot was saved though by Michelle Swartz. Then with just under six minutes left in the first half, UMass had its first corner of the game. Senior Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British Columbia) tried to flick a lob shot over Swartz, but she batted it down with her blocker.
Freshman Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.) broke in alone less than a minute into the start of the second half. Swartz came out and saved her shot, but UMass was given a corner. Junior Kwylan Jaggassar (Longdenville, Trinidad & Tobago) had her shot saved, but Borneo was there to stuff in the rebound for her second goal of the season. It came just 1:05 in.
Richmond came right back and put the pressure on after the Minutewomen tied the game. The Spiders kept the ball in the offensive zone and tallied three goals in less than 10 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Allie Howard got a rebound after a shot on a corner and stuffed it in to give the Spiders a 2-1 lead with just over 30 minutes left. Less than five minutes later, Richmond added an insurance goal as Shannon Taylor scored off a corner. Four minutes later, Allie Howard tipped in her second goal of the game to give the Spiders a 4-1 lead. She sat on the far post following a corner and re-directed a pass from Colleen Wevodau.
UMass got a corner with six minutes left, but Jagassar's shot was saved by Swartz.
The Spiders finished the game with a 26-9 advantage in shots and 10-3 in corners. Letourneau finished the game with 12 saves to tie her career-high. Swartz made eight for the Spiders.
The Minutewomen continue the weekend trip with a 2:00 PM (Eastern Time) game at Saint Louis on Sunday. This marks the first-ever meeting between these two schools as Atlantic 10 Conference rivals. They have met twice in history with the Minutewomen winning both games. Live stats will be available via Gametracker at www.umassathletics.com.
