Mary Shea Named A-10 Rookie Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass freshman forward Mary Shea (Foxboro, Mass.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week the league office announced Monday. Shea scored the game-winning goal for the Minutewomen Sunday at Rhode Island to send them into the A-10 Tournament.
With just 8:17 left in the second half, Shea received a pass in front of the cage from freshman Brigitte Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) and stuffed it home to break a 1-1 tie. In one motion, Shea dove to get the pass and tip it in the cage. It was her third goal of the season and second game-winner.
With the win, UMass clinched the No. 3 seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Tournament. The tournament will be played Nov. 4-5 at Temple's Geasey Field. UMass plays the No. 2 seeded Temple Owls at 2:00 PM on Friday. There will be a live audio broadcast of the game as well as live stats via gametracker. Links for both can be found at www.umassathletics.com. No. 1 Richmond plays No. 4 Saint Joseph's at 4:00. The two winners will play at 2:00 on Saturday for the A-10 title. UMass owns a league-high nine A-10 crows and is a league-best 23-7 all-time in the tournament. In the 17 years that field hockey has been an A-10 sport, UMass has made the field of four 16 times.
