PHILADELPHIA, Pa - The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team (6-22, 2-14 A-10) fell to Duquesne (16-12, 10-6 A-10) this afternoon, 73-44, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 championship tournament. Junior forward Edris Bailey (Mt. Hope, Trinidad and Tobago) led all scorers with 18 points and was the game's leading rebounder as well, as she pulled down seven boards.

The Minutewomen began the game with a Bailey layup at 18:24, but never would regain the lead after a jumper from Maria Stankevich tied the game at two each. A solid defensive effort in the first half kept Massachusetts in the game despite shooting 9-25, as they held co-A-10 Player of the Year Candace Futrell to zero first-half points. 12 of Bailey's 18 points came in the first stanza, including six of UMass' first seven.

In the second half, the Duquesne offense came alive, as they shot .533 from the field. The Dukes saw four players score in double figures, including Futrell, who poured in 11 second-half points. Aiga Bautre led the Dukes in scoring, as she went 7-12 from the floor and tallied 15 points.

The Minutewomen outrebounded Duquesne, 35-31, but turned the ball over 22 times, to the Dukes' 15. Massachusetts shot .351 (20-57) for the game, while Duquesne was 28-56 (.500) from the field.

Freshman forward Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) was the only other UMass player to reach double-figure scoring totals, as she dropped in 11 points to go with her six rebounds. Freshman guard Joyce Massey (Detroit, Mich.) dished out a career-high six assists in the contest as well.

The Minutewomen close out their season with a record of 6-22, 2-14 in the Atlantic 10 conference, and fail to advance past the first round of the A-10 playoffs for the second consecutive year.
