AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas announced this morning that Stephen Briggs, a 6-9, 220-pound redshirt freshman forward from Houston, Texas, has been dismissed from the Minuteman program for a violation of team rules.
"We are sorry that it didn't work out for Stephen at UMass, and we wish him and his family well in the future," Lappas said.
Briggs, who originally signed with Massachusetts during the 2001 early-signing period, did not play for the Minutemen during the 2002-03 season. He was reinstated into the UMass program on Jan. 17, 2003, after being dismissed from the program for the first time on Oct. 11, 2002.
As a senior at Houston's Westside High School, Briggs averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game. The school's team captain and MVP as a senior, Briggs helped Westside to the 2002 district championship, and earned All-State, All-District and Regional All-Star recognition.
