Minutemen Third After First Day At A-10 Meet

Amherst, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's track and field team is in third place after the first day of competition at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in Richmond, Va. The Minutemen, who have finished second at this meet in each of the past six seasons, tallied 48 points on day one to trail Rhode Island (113 points) and La Salle (54). Duquesne (35), Richmond (15), Temple (14), Saint Joseph's (13) and Fordham (four) stand behind UMass heading into tomorrow's action.
Leading the way for the Minutemen was sophomore Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.), who earned a pair of silver medals Saturday. He finished second in the javelin with a career-long throw of 192-9 and was the runner-up in the high jump with a mark of 6-5 1/2.
Senior Ken Scheider (Woodridge, N.J.) placed second in the pole vault (15-1), while freshman Mike Antonio (Westboro, Mass.) was fourth in the javelin (184-10) and senior Dave Hantman (Cambridge, Mass.) placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run in 32.46.66.
Other scorers for UMass on day one included: senior Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.), who was fifth in the discus (142-9), sophomore Joe McCormack (Wrentham, Mass.), who tied for sixth in the high jump (6-1 1/2), freshman James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass,), who placed seventh in the long jump (22-2 1/2) and sophomore Rafael Jordan (Amherst, Mass.), who was sixth in both the discus (132-11) and the hammer throw (135-4).
Senior Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana), the league's defending 100-meter dash champion, recorded the fastest time in the 100-meter dash prelims at 10.54, which ranks as the league's fastest time in that event this spring. Frimpong-Boateng's teammate, freshman Chris Brayley (Chicopee, Mass.), ran a 10.94 in the 100-meter dash prelims and will also advance into Sunday's final round.
Another UMass senior, John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.), the defending A-10 decathlon champion, sits in second place midway through the competition with 3,288 points, 111 points behind Rhode Island's Dustin Bilbruck.
All Atlantic 10 individual champions automatically qualify for NCAA Regional competition, scheduled for May 30-31. Action commences on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles in the decathlon, with the women's heptathlon starting at 9:00 a.m.
