Amherst, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts basketball coach Steve Lappas announced tonight that Lawrence Carrier, a 6-8, 225-pound forward from Salisbury (Conn.) School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Minutemen next season.
"We are thrilled to have Lawrence join our program," Lappas said. "He's a very talented player, who can play more than one position for us. Lawrence has a strong all-around game, but he is an exceptional three-point shooter. He's going to be a great addition to our program."
Carrier averaged 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds for Coach Chris Hinchey's team while recording a team-high 74 steals. Despite missing several games over the course of his career due to injury, he ranks as Salisbury's all-time scoring leader with 1,355 points. Carrier selected UMass over Colorado, Southern California, Miami, Arizona State, Oregon State, Texas and Rutgers.
"There were so many pluses, it was a no-brainer (for Lawrence to sign with Massachusetts)," Hinchey said. "We were impressed in the recruiting process with how well Steve (Lappas) and UMass work with kids like Lawrence."
A native of San Bernardino, Calif., Carrier played his AAU basketball for Coach Albert Perry's InlandI squad.
He is the second player to sign with the Minutemen for next season, and the first to do so in the spring signing period, which ends next month. Last fall, Lappas and his staff signed consensus Top 100 player Artie Bowers of Wilmington, Del.
