AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball sophomore Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) was named co-Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week today, while freshman Maurice Maxwell was named the Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week for Dec. 15-21.
Freeman scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting in the 67-60 victory over Maine and was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for his efforts. He followed that performance by netting 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds in the 82-66 win over Albany. The double-double was the fourth of the season for the first-year player who is currently leading the Minutemen with 15.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg.
The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee also announced that men's basketball freshman Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named the Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week from Dec. 15-21. This annoucement was delayed as there was no Sports Luncheon last week due to the Christmas holiday. Maxwell scored a career-high 19 points in the 83-65 Minutemen victory over Marshall. He hit .643 from the field against the Thundering Herd, making nine of 14 field goal attempts. Maxwell also had a career-high five steals, the most by a Minuteman since Jonathan DePina had five steals at Rhode Island on Jan. 30, 2001. In addition, he finished the game with three assists, one rebound and one blocked shot.
UMass men's basketball (5-5) returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 3 as it hosts Tennessee at the Mullins Center with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.
