Men's Hoops Vaults Past Vermont, 76-64

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Anthony Anderson scored a career-high 29 points, including seven 3-pointers, leading Massachusetts to a 76-64 victory over Vermont on Tuesday night.
The Minutemen (2-2) led virtually from the start and led by as many as 20 points.
Vermont (0-4) closed the gap to seven points twice in the second half. Leading 71-64 with less than two minutes to play, UMass scored the game's last five points on a Jeff Viggiano free throw, a hoop by Artie Bowers and a pair of free throws by Anderson.
Anderson was 9-for-13 from the field, including 7-for-9 from the 3-point line.
Bowers ended with 16 points and Maurice Maxwell with 14 for the Minutemen, who shot 51.9 percent from the field and held Vermont to 33.8 percent.
Taylor Coppenrath led the Catamounts, last year's America East champions, with 23 points. T.J. Sorrentine added 16 points.
UMass broke a 7-7 tie with a 5-0 run and led rest of the way. The Minutemen hit 7-of-11 from the 3-point line in the first half, and led 42-25 at halftime.
Anderson scored 16 points in the first half.
