Amherst, Mass. - University of Massachusetts head tennis coach Judy Dixon will be attending the 19th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coaches Convention at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, as a member of the ITA's Division I Operating Committee.
Nearly 300 men's and women's college tennis coaches at all levels will gather for this year's convention at Doral. The four-day convention, which takes place at Doral December 12-15, will be highlighted by some of the most influential people in the sport of tennis, such as: tennis legend Stan Smith, celebrated coaches Nick Bollettieri and Dennis Van der Meer, human performance expert Dr. Jack Groppel, sports science expert Dr. Jim Loehr, the coaches for two of the last three NCAA men's championship teams, Craig Tiley of Illinois and Manuel Diaz of Georgia, as well as many other teachers, coaches and respected people in the tennis industry.
"The convention is always a very exciting time of the year for our Coaches Association," ITA Executive Director David A Benjamin said. "Besides being able to take in great clinics and workshops at a beautiful resort in a great city, the coaches also have a forum to meet and discuss the important issues within college tennis today."
In addition offering clinics, panel discussions, a trade show and a chance to exchange ideas, the ITA Coaches Convention serves as the venue for the annual association meetings, which includes its Board of Director and Operating Committee sessions. The ITA Operating Committee determines tennis policy for the ITA at the NCAA Division I level and consists of men's and women's coaches. Each men's and women's geographic region is represented on these committees with a member selected through regional elections each spring. Operating Committee members are also selected by virtue of serving on the Board of Directors, serving as a chairperson for an ITA national tournament and/or serving as a chairperson on another ITA committee.
Among the convention highlights will be a membership and awards banquet on Dec. 13 honoring the 2003 Wilson/ITA National Coaches of the Year with Wayne Bryan appearing as the featured speaker.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous ITA national and regional championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, and the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship. The official ITA website is ITATennis.com
