Women's Basketball Adds Transfer

AMHERST, Mass. - Former St. John's women's basketball stand-out Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) has transferred to the University of Massachusetts and will be eligible to play next season. Gulak, who is currently taking classes at UMass, must sit out the season per NCAA transfer regulations but will have two years of eligibility left.
"Patricia is everything and then some," said UMass Head Coach Marnie Dacko. "She is an outstanding student-athlete and will fit into our system very nicely. We are all excited at the opportunity to coach her and watch as she continues to develop her skills"
Gulak is a 6-4 center who has been a major contributor for the Red Storm the past two seasons. Last season, she averaged 7.2 ppg and 3.7 rpg while playing in all 27 games. She was a 41 percent shooter from the field last year and also posted 28 assists, 20 steals and 12 blocked shots.
In the 2001-02 season, Gulak was St. Johns' leading rebounder at 5.9 rpg and the second-leading scorer with 9.4 ppg. She played in all 27 games, making 25 starts while averaging 30 minutes per contest. She was a 36 percent shooter from the field and also added 37 assists, 33 steals and 23 blocked shots.
In high school, Gulak played for the SMS PZ Kosz. in Warsaw, Poland and then had a two-year stint with TKS Lasznosc Olsztyn. Based on their outstanding play, TKS Lasznosc Olsztyn was asked to join the highest level of the Polish professional league. Gulak averaged 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocks per game for the Polish Junior National Team during the European Junior Championships in Poland. They won a bronze medal by defeating Lithuania in the third-place game.
The Minutewomen will open up the 2003-04 season on Friday, Nov. 21, with a 7:30 p.m. game at Sacred Heart.
