AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts football team has named two captains for the upcoming 2002 season. Senior center Maikel Miret (Miami, Fla.) and senior linebacker Corey Potter (Doylestown, Pa.) will serve as the captains of the Minutemen this year.
"Maikel and Corey are not only great players, they bring a tremendous amount of leadership and character to our program," said UMass head coach Mark Whipple. "They also have a good deal of experience, as they have both been starters throughout their first three seasons. I expect them to follow in the line of our great captains from previous seasons."
Miret has been a three-year starter at center for the Minutemen, starting all 35 of UMass' games over the last three seasons. He was the leader of the offensive line which allowed UMass to average 300.1 yards of total offense per game during the 2001 season. In 2000, Miret helped the Minutemen rush for 170.4 yards per game and throw for 232.4 yards per contest, while in the 1999 season he allowed UMass to rush for 187.9 yards per game and pass for 248.5 yards per game.
Potter has been one of UMass' top linebackers over the last three seasons, playing in 32 games with 26 starts. He has career totals of 163 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, five sacks and three interceptions during his first three years with the Minutemen. Last season, Potter ranked fifth on the team with 68 total tackles, including 41 solo stops, while also recording six tackles for loss, an interception, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. He also totaled 49 tackles during the 2000 season, while making 46 tackles in 1999.
The Minutemen will conclude spring practice this Saturday, May 11, with the annual spring game beginning at 11:00 a.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
