Skiing Completes Season With USCSA Nationals

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- The University of Massachusetts men's and women's ski teams closed out their seasons finishing sixth and seventh, respectively in this past weekend's USCSA Nationals held at the Waterville Valley Ski area.

For the Minutewomen in the slalom, senior Lauren Brodey (Jamesville, N.Y.) recorded the best finish as she placed 15th with a combined time of 1:36.78. Junior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) finished in 16th place (1:37.73). Also racing for Massachusetts were junior Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.) and freshman Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.), who finished 34th and 39th, respectively.

In the giant slalom, Lewenberg recorded the best UMass finish as she placed 14th with a combined time of 2:09.44. Also racing for UMass were Smith, Lyon and senior Ericka Olson (Northfield, Mass.). They placed 29th, 77th and 89th, respectively.

For the Minutemen, senior Ken Thoman (Lebanan, Ohio) recorded the team's best finish in both the slalom (1:31.64) and giant slalom (2:16.37). He finished 12th and 16th in the two events. Other UMass competitors in the slalom were sophomore Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.), junior Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) and sophomore Dave Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.). They finished 25th, 31st and 35th, respectively.

Gibson placed just behind Thoman in the giant slalom with a combined time of 2:16.69 (17th). Other UMass competitors were Granger, Dave Pomeroy and freshman Marshall Doughty (Quincy, Mass.). They each finished 23rd, 39th and 42nd, respectively.

Several Massachusetts skiiers garnered All-America accolades. Olson was named a second team Academic All-American, while Dave Pomeroy was an Academic All-American honorable mention selection. Lewenberg was named a second team All-American in the women's alpine giant slalom and Thoman was selected to the second team All-America men's alpine slalom. Thoman was also named to the second team All-America men's alpine individual combined.
