Women's Gymnastics Wins a Pair in Last Home Meet

AMHERST, Mass. -
The University of Massachusetts defeated both Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a women's gymnastics tri-meet held at Boyden Gymnasium this evening. The Minutewomen finished with a season-high 192.525 team score to place ahead of Yale (191.575) and M.I.T. (156.150). UMass was first or tied for first in three of the four exercises. The Minutewomen had the top team score on the beam and the floor and tied Yale for the best score on the vault.
Junior Megan Donoghue (Tewksbury, Mass.) won the all-around with a score of 38.625, and finished first on the floor exercise with a score of 9.775. Senior Tracy Chew (Silver Spring, Md.) tied for second with Jamie Green of Yale in the all-around with a score of 38.175. Chew tied for first on the vault with Green and fellow Minutewoman Nicole Groccia (Brooklyn, N.Y.). All three had a score of 9.700. Chew also finished third on the balance beam.
Junior Katie Teft (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.975, including getting a perfect 10 from one judge. Sophomore Mellory Giberson (Bingham, Maine) came in second on the balance beam with a score of 9.675. Freshman Danielle Clarke (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Donoghue tied for fourth on the beam with scores of 9.575.
The Minutewomen improve to 5-12 overall on the season. Prior to the start of the meet UMass honored Chew, its lone senior. Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, March 23, in the Atlantic 10 Championship held in Kingston, R.I.
