RICHMOND, Va. - University of Massachusetts freshman Jaime Bawden (Penticton, British, Columbia), senior Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.) and sophomore Adrianne Monaco (Oxford, N.Y.) were selected to the 2002 Atlantic 10 field hockey All-Conference team as announced this evening at the conference's annual postseason banquet.
As a freshman, Bawden currently leads the team in scoring with 10 points on five goals. She has played every minute this season for the Minutewomen, attempting 13 shots. Her first collegiate goal came in the season opener against Boston University. She has also recorded goals against Rhode Island, Ohio, La Salle and Richmond.
"Jaime has played outstanding this season," said UMass Head Coach Patty Shea. "It is wonderful when your leading scorer is a freshman and the fact that she was able to step right in and score in her first game."
Bohonowicz finished the regular season with seven points on two goals and three assists, while playing in all 20 games for the Minutewomen. She scored goals against Providence and Saint Joseph's, while dishing out assists versus Boston University, Richmond and West Chester. For her career, she now has 21 points on five goals and 11 assists.
"I cannot ask for anything more from Sarah," said Shea. "She has played everywhere that we want her to and has excelled at it."
Monaco is currently second on the squad with nine points on four goals and an assist. She has played in 15 games since returning from an injury. The sophomore scored the game-winning goals over Saint Joseph's and West Chester. She also recorded a goal in games against La Salle and Temple, while also dishing out an assist in the Temple game. She now has 10 career points.
"For Adrianne to come back from an injury and play like she has this season, it really says a lot," said Shea. "These three girls are very deserving of this award."
A-10 regular season champion Richmond swept all four of the major awards with Jill Murphy taking home Offensive Player of the Year honors, Lydia Decembrino garnering Defensive Player of the Year accolades, Michelle Swartz picking up Rookie of the Year accolades and Agne Bradley earning the Coach of the Year citation.
The Minutewomen, seeded second in the upcoming postseason tournament, will play third-seeded West Chester on Friday, Nov. 8 at 2:00 p.m. The winner will play the Richmond/Saint Joseph's winner on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1:00 p.m. for the conference championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
