Women's Gymnastics Drops Close Meet At New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Massachusetts women's gymnastics team posted its highest score of the season, but came up just short at New Hampshire, falling 193.600-192.325. The Minutewomen recorded their best performances of the season in three out of four events, posting scores of 48.625 on uneven bars, 48.325 on balance beam and 48.400 on floor exercise.
Sophomore Katie Teft (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had an outstanding day for UMass, placing first on uneven bars with a 9.875, while coming in second on balance beam with a 9.800 and finishing third on vault with a 9.575. Senior Mary Moore (Coral Springs, Fla.) also won an event for the Minutewomen, placing first on balance beam with a 9.825.
Sophomore Jen Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came in second on floor exercise with a 9.825, fifth on balance beam with a 9.700 and third in the all-around with a total of 38.050. Other Minutewomen to place in the top five on an individual event were freshman Mellory Giberson (Bingham, Maine) on uneven bars (fifth / 9.725), sophomore Kelly Hanson (Harvard, Mass.) on uneven bars (fifth / 9.725) and senior Kyla Palombini (Peekskill, N.Y.) on floor exercise (fifth / 9.800), while junior Tracy Chew (Silver Spring, Md.) placed fourth in the all-around with a total of 37.625.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 17, when they play host to Alaska-Anchorage, M.I.T. and Yale in a 4:00 p.m. meet at Boyden Gymnasium.
