WASHINGTON, D.C. - Co-captains Kristeena Alexander and Corrin Reid led a balanced attack on offense and defense as GW topped the the University of Massachusetts tonight, 58-41, in Atlantic 10 conference women's basketball action at Smith Center.
When guard Kristeena Alexander last went against UMass she had one of her best games of the season, netting 23 points on 7-11 shooting, notching seven assists and three steals. The 5-6 guard even had a block in the contest, one of only two she has recorded this season. Alexander continued her mastery of UMass in their second meeting, scoring 15 points on 4-10 shooting, grabbing 4 rebounds, notching 4 assists and a season-high seven steals.
The Colonials (18-8, 12-2) harassed UMass (11-13, 6-7) on defense the entire contest, pressing the Minutewomen into 25 turnovers. Reid came off the bench to spark GW, scoring 10 points on 4-6 shooting, collecting five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Freshman center Ugo Oha continued her impressive play, scoring 12 points on 5-9 shooting. Oha, who receivedher fourth Rookie of the Week citation on Sunday, also had six rebounds and three blocks.
Down by six at half, UMass was not able to get into the flow on the offensive end of the court, only making five field goals in the second half, and shooting a dismal 22.7% (5-22) from the floor. GW slowly extended their lead over the half with a combination of solid offensive production and stifling defensive pressure.
Amber Sneed (Cincinnati, Ohio) led UMass with 15 points, while Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Minutewomen next travel to Pittsburh on Sunday, Feb. 18, for a 2:05 p.m. game with Duquesne.
