PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Junior Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds as the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team defeated Rider, 65-54, this afternoon in the consolation game of the PNC Wildcat Classic.

Junior Nekole Smith (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored 12 points and added 13 rebounds for the Minutewomen, who shot 37 percent from the field. Junior Amber Sneed (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Katie Nelson (Ellicott City, Md.) scored 10 and 12 points respectively in the win. Nelson hit four out of her eight three-point attempts and had four assists, while Sneed added six rebounds and five assists.

The Minutewomen won their first game when leading at halftime this year and committed a season-low 11 turnovers. They outrebounded the Broncos 50-31, including 19-9 on the offensive glass.

Kathleen Kearon led the way for Rider with 12 points. Tanya Cross chipped in with 10.

With the victory, the Minutewomen end a six-game losing streak and improve to 2-9. The loss drops the Broncos to 1-9.

UMass will open up Atlantic 10 Conference play Thursday, Jan. 3, when it hosts Temple in a 7:00 p.m. game at the William D. Mullins Center.
