SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Monty Mack scored 25 points and led a second-half surge to lift Massachusetts to an 80-69 victory over Duquesne Saturday night.
UMass (6-10, 4-1 Atlantic 10) led by six points at halftime, but Duquesne went on a 7-0 run early in the second half, capped by Jack May's 3-pointer, to take its only lead of the game at 37-36.
But Mack hit a bucket then followed up with a 3-pointer on the Minutemen's next possession to put UMass on top to stay. The lead grew as large as 15, 69-54.
Micah Brand had 16 points and Kitwana Rhymer added 15 for UMass.
Duquesne (7-11, 1-4) was led by Courtney Wallace with 17 points and May with 14.
UMass shot 52 percent from the field in the first half. It was 16-8 after 10 minutes and 34-28 at the break, although the Minutemen led by as many as 10 points on two occasions.
Mack scored 11 in the first half, but missed all five of his attempts from 3-point range.
UMass played at the Springfield Civic Center for the first time in six years.
