UMass Skiing Teams Compete At Boston College

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- ?The University of Massachusetts men's and women's ski teams competed this past Saturday and Sunday at the Boston College Carnival at Ascutney Mountain in Vermont. The women's team placed third in the slalom behind Boston College and Colby/Sawyer and second in the giant slalom, while the men finished third in both events following Plymouth State and Colby/Sawyer.
In the men's standings, freshman Pete Sanford (Queenstown, New Zealand) placed second out of 78 finishers in the slalom with a total time of 1:31.63. He also scored the Minutemen points in the giant slalom, as he placed fourth at 1:32.52. Sophomore Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) placed third in the giant slalom (1:32.33) and fourth in the slalom at 1:29.25. Freshman Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) finishing 14th in the slalom with a total time of 1:32.42. Other slalom scorers for UMass were junior Jordan Kingdon (East Lansing, Mich.) who was 31st at 1:39.37, shortly followed by senior Christian Guertin (Ashburnham, Mass.) at 32nd place with a total time of 1:39.74. In the giant slalom, Gibson placed sixth (1:33.20) and sophomore Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) tied for 20th at 1:37.05. Junior Pete Glawischnig (Shelburne, Mass.) took 23rd (1:37.22).
On the women's side, sophomore Tina King (Easthampton, Mass.) was seventh in the giant slalom at 1:38.70. King was followed by freshman Carolyn Lewenberg (Auburndale, Mass.) at eighth with a total time of 1:39.30 and placing ninth was sophomore Lauren Brodey (Fayetteville, N.Y.) with at time of 1:39.35. Sophomore Ericka Olson (Pittsfield, Mass.) took 16th at 1:42.33. Lewenberg placed fifth in the slalom at 1:33.71, directly followed by Brodey placing sixth (1:35.21). King was 16th with a total time of 1:40.61 and senior Katie Keane (Acton, Mass.) finished 17th at 1:42.17. Olson was 21st with a total time of 1:43.90.
UMass returns to the slopes this Saturday and Sunday, February 19th and 20th, to compete in the Smith College Carnival at Charlemont, Mass. for its last regular season match up of 2000.
