UMass Skiing Starts Season Strong At Home Opener

AMHERST, Mass. --- The University of Massachusetts women's ski team reaches their `99 season highs of second place in the slalom and giant slalom during their first meet of the season. Freshman Carolyn Lewenberg (Auburndale, Mass.) was high scorer for the Minutewomen in both events recording fifth in the slalom with a total time of 1:17.07 and fourth in the giant slalom at 1:45.23. Newly acquired to the men's squad, freshman Pete Sanford (Queenstown, New Zealand) placed third in the slalom (1:10.84) and 13th in the giant slalom (1:41.00).
On the women's side, Boston College finished first in the slalom followed by Umass in second place. In the giant slalom, Plymouth State was victorious as UMass took second. For the men, UMass finished second behind Plymouth State in the slalom and took third in the giant slalom after Plymouth State won the event and Colby/Sawyer took second.
For the Minutewomen, sophomore Lauren Brodey (Fayetteville, N.Y.) placed eighth at 1:19.51, senior Katie Keane (Acton, Mass.) was 11th (1:21.21) and sophomore Tina King Easthampton, Mass.) finished 13th at 1:21.57.
The Minutemen had the same four high scorers in each event. After Sanford, freshman James Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) was seventh in the slalom (1:12.44) and eighth in the giant slalom (1:39.45). Sophomore Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) placed eighth in the slalom with a total time of 1:12.59 and fourth in the giant slalom at 1:38.91. Sophomore Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) finished 17th in the slalom (1:14.55) and 19th in the giant slalom (1:43.45).
Both the Umass men's and women's ski teams return to action this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 29 and 30, at Waterville Valley, N.H. For the Plymouth State Carnival.
