UMass Skiing Makes Mark At Plymouth State Carnival

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. --- The University of Massachusetts ski teams competed at the Plymouth State Carnival January 29 and 30. Freshman Carolyn Lewenberg (Auburndale, Mass.) led the women's team in both the slalom and giant slalom by finishing fourth and second, respectively. Top scorer for the men's team was freshman Pete Sanford (Queenstown, New Zealand), placing second in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom.
Three other Minutewomen reached the top 25 of slalom ski racers. Sophomore Lauren Brodey (Fayetteville, N.Y.) took eighth with a total time of 1:57.58, while sophomore Tina King (Easthampton, Mass.) and junior Margaret LaBombard (Queensbury, N.Y.) finished 18th and 25th with total times of 2:05.40 and 2:09.56 respectively. King also took fourth in the giant slalom.
For the Minutemen, freshman Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) finished eighth in the slalom (1:47.45) and 12th in the giant slalom while sophomore Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) finished 11th in the slalom and seventh in the giant slalom (1.40.70). Sophomore Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) placed 19th in the giant slalom at 1:53.56.
Both teams return to action next weekend, Feb. 6 and 7, in the Brown/Uconn Carnival in Lincoln, N.H.
