UMass Ski Teams Both Victorious

Lincoln, N.H. -- ?At the Brown/UConn Carnival this weekend, freshman Pete Sanford (Queenstown, New Zealand) won the slalom with a total time of 1:17.48, sky rocketing the Minutemen to first place. By winning the race, Sanford not only joins an elite group of UMass skiers, he is the first UMass skier of the season to take an event. Sanford was first out of 78 ski racers. In the giant slalom, Sanford placed ninth (1:41.46). Sophomore Tina King (Easthampton, Mass.) regains her role as high scorer for the Minutewomen, placing third in the giant slalom in a total time of 1:45.44. She helped the Minutewomen as she rounded out the top three UMass scoring spots taking 13th in the slalom at 1:26.94.

On the women's side, UMass won the slalom at 320.74 followed by Boston College (323.44) and Plymouth State (324.86). Boston College finished first in the slalom at 251.13, while UMass took second with a total score of 253.70 and Brown rounded out the top three at 255.04. For the men, UMass defeated all other teams in the slalom, scoring 235.54 followed by Plymouth State (236.78) and Boston College (237.59). The Miutemen placed third at 308.11 in the giant slalom. Placing first was Plymouth State with a total time of 299.46 and tallying second was Colby/Sawyer (300.89).

For the women, freshman Carolyn Lewenberg (Auburndale, Mass.) was high scorer for UMass in the slalom, placing fourth (1:22.73) for the second consecutive week. She placed fourth in the giant slalom, as well, at 1:46.77. Lauren Brodey's (Fayetteville, N.Y.) slalom and giant slalom runs also counted torwards the Minutewomen's total. In the slalom she was the second high scorer for UMass with a total time of 1:24.03, which placed her sixth overall. Brodey was 10th in the giant slalom, the third ski racer to finish for UMass at 1:48.53.

Sophomores Ken Thoman (Lebanon, Ohio) was the high UMass scorer in the giant slalom, placing fifth at 1:40.64. He was eighth in the slalom with a total score of 1:19.20. Rich Granger (Princeton, Mass.) finished 20th in the giant slalom (1:46.01) and 23rd in the slalom at 1:22.23. Also contributing, were freshman Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) who was fifth in the slalom with a total time of 1:18.86. Jordan Kingdon (East Lansing, Mich.) placed 33rd at 1:25.83 and Jay Cherosnick (Goshen, Conn.) was 37th (1:27.75).

Both the UMass men's and women's ski teams return to action this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13, at Ascutney Mountain, Vt., for the Boston College Tournament.
