Women's Basketball Downs New Hampshire, 56-39

DURHAM, N.H. - Siiri Liivandi (Rapla, Estonia) had 15 points to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 56-39 win over the University of New Hampshire in women's basketball action here at Lundholm Gymnasium this evening. The win improves UMass to 4-5 overall, while the Wildcats now stand at 3-6.
Senior Kelly Donohue led New Hampshire with 11 points. Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Paige Harris (Rochester, Mich.) each had 10 points for the Minutewomen.
After UMass jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, the Wildcats clawed back and took a 15-14 lead with 5:10 to play on a basket by freshman Kate Hennessey. The visitors would then go on a 13-2 run to take a 27-17 lead. UNH would cut the lead to 27-19 at the half.
The hosts quickly cut the lead to four 48 seconds into the second stanza. After that, the two teams would trade baskets, and UNH pulled to within three, 38-35, on a layup by sophomore Taylore Jarvis with 8:07 to play. From there the Minutewomen went on an 8-0 run to go up 11 with 4:59 remaining. New Hampshire would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
UMass returns to action after the Christmas holiday as they travel to Jersey City, New Jersey to play in the St. Peter's Tournament. The Minutewomen open up the four-team tournament with a game versus Alabama on Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m.. They will then play the next night, Dec. 30, against the winner of the St. Peter's/Fairleigh Dickinson game. The Consolation game will be played at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Championship at 7:00 p.m.
