UMass Defeats Charlotte in Season Opener, 64-48

AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman guard Paige Harris (Rochester, Mich.) came off the bench to score all 13 of her points in the second half as the University of Massachusetts defeated Charlotte in their season opener, 64-48. Harris scored nine of her 13 points in a pivotal 13-0 second half run that saw UMass open up a 16 point lead with only three minutes remaining in the game.
Forward Jennifer Butler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected a triple-double to lead the Minutewomen, as she registered game-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds, and a school-record 10 steals. Point guard Kathy Coyner (Belpre, Ohio) scored 16 points, including 8-for-10 from the free throw line, and added six assists in 40 minutes of action.
Harris, playing her first game in a Maroon & White uniform, went 3-for-5 from three point land and was perfect in four free throw attempts in only 16 minutes on the floor.
Quidara Russell led Charlotte with 11 points, while Tonia Phifer, the 49ers leading returning scorer, was held to 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting. As a team, Charlotte was held to 35.9% shooting from the field for the game.
UMass is next in action on Sunday, November 19, as they travel south for a match-up with third-ranked Georgia. Tip-off is slated for 2:30 p.m.
