BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Monty Mack scored 22 points Saturday and Massachusetts helped Virginia Tech tie its record for home scoring futility in a 49-41 victory Saturday.
The Hokies (9-10, 3-4 Atlantic 10) shot 31 percent from the floor, missing 12 of 14 3-point attempts, and connected on just 5 of 11 free throws. Their 41 points tied their record low at Cassell Coliseum, set in a 45-41 loss to Temple in the 1997-98 season.
UMass (11-8, 5-2) opened the game with a 10-0 run that included four layups. The Minutemen led by 39-24 with 12:34 to play, saw the Hokies respond with a 12-2 run that cut the margin to five with 2:54 remaining and then pulled away again.
Kitwana Rhymer added six points and 15 rebounds for the Minutemen, who got scoring from only six players and shot just 40.4 percent from the field.
Dennis Mims had 18 points to lead the Hokies. Brian Chase, Virginia Tech's No. 2 scorer, managed just 5 after missing 10 of 12 shots, including 7 of 8 3-pointers.
