PITTSBURGH (AP) - Monty Mack scored 22 points, including six during a critical second half stretch, to lift Massachusetts over Duquesne 84-75 in an Atlantic 10 game on Thursday.
Duquesne came back from a 13-point deficit to lead 62-59 with 9:10 to go when Mack hit two consecutive 3-pointers. The baskets restored momentum Massachusetts (10-8, 3-3) lost during the Dukes' comeback.
Mack's 3-pointers - he had five on the night - helped the Minutemen to a 10-2 run and they were never trailed again while surviving a scare down the stretch when the Dukes closed to 73-70 with 3:39 to go.
Wayne Smith scored 20 points to lead Duquesne (8-10, 3-4), who dropped their third straight game. Massachusetts has won four of its last five games after losing three straight.
The Minutemen opened their second 13-point lead in the game early in the second half. But Duquesne staged a 20-3 run, hitting three 3-pointers, and was up 55-51 with 14:11 to play.
Massachusetts tied the game 55-55 with four unanswered points. Baskets by Brad Midgley and Kevin Forney gave the Dukes a 60-55 lead with 10:23 to play before Mack's consecutive 3-pointers turned the game back in the Minutemen's direction.
