PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chris Kirkland had 18 points and sparked a late rally and Kitwana Rhymer hit two crucial free throws with seven seconds left as Massachusetts defeated St. Joseph's 73-69 Sunday.
Monty Mack added 19 points for Massachusetts (8-7, 2-1 Atlantic), which defeated the Hawks for the fifth straight time. Marvin O'Connor had a career-high 28 points for St. Joseph's (6-7, 1-3).
A jump shot by Kirkland gave the Minutemen a 64-62 edge. A 3-point shot by O'Connor put the Hawks ahead, 65-64, at the 2:32 mark.
Kirkland then scored four points during a 7-3 run to give Massachusetts a 71-68 edge. After Jonathan DePina and O'Connor exchanged freethrows, Rhymer made his two clutch foul shots.
Rhymer had 12 rebounds for the Minutmen who have defeated St. Joseph's in 19 of the last 22 meetings. Andre Howard had 12 points for St. Joseph's, which was playing its first home game since Nov. 29.
