UMass In The NCAA Tournament
September 14, 1999 | Men's Water Polo
Sept. 14, 1999
By defeating Queens 11-10 in sudden-death overtime in the 1998 Eastern Championship title game, the Minutemen earned their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years.
UMass men?s water polo has established a great deal of history at the NCAA Championship. In 1995, UMass made NCAA history by becoming the first eastern team to advance to the NCAA water polo semifinals, eventually finishing in fourth place for the highest finish ever by an eastern team.
UMass also holds the distinction of being the only East Coast team to defeat a West Coast team in NCAA Championship tournament play. The Minutemen were making their first NCAA appearance in 1993, when they defeated UC San Diego 15-13 in the second round.
In its other NCAA appearances, UMass finished eighth in 1994, while it earned fourth place finishes in 1996 and 1998.
This year the NCAA Championship will be held in San Diego, Calif.
