UMass football alumnus Tony Chambers provided an all-around spark to the team for three seasons from 1951-53 and impacted the game on both sides of the ball.
Despite playing during a era dominated by the run game, Chambers totaled 70 receptions for 851 yards and 12 touchdowns en route to becoming one of the program's earliest all-America award recipients. Chambers teamed with quarterback Noel Reebenacker on what remains one of the most prolific passing teams in UMass history, and was named all-Yankee Conference and all-New England in addition to his all-America honors.
While excelling on offense, Chambers' love was on the defensive end of the field, and he played every snap of every game in the 1952 season. Among Chambers' coaches at UMass were baseball coaching legend (and football end coach) Earl Lorden and line coach Chester Gladchuk.
Chambers was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
