Patty Shea provided the University of Massachusetts field hockey program with a lockdown goalkeeper from 1980-83 and dependable program leader during a 10-year career as the team's head coach. In total, Shea helped the program reach eight NCAA Tournaments, including the team's lone appearance in the championship game as a sophomore.

The 2000 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year subsequently guided the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances and five Atlantic 10 Championships while she concluded her tenure as head coach with 104 victories, second-most in school history.
Shea was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
