A three-year letterwinner in football and lacrosse at UMass, Richard "Dick" Hoss shined under legendary lacrosse mentor Richard F. Garber from 1959-61 and earned honorable mention all-America honors as a midfielder in 1960 and 1961.

In his senior season, Hoss served as team captain, was an All-New England selection and participated in the prestigious USILA North-South All-Star game. During his three years with the lacrosse team, UMass complied a 21-9-1 overall record. He led the nation in 1960 with 37 goals and his 46 points that year led all New England midfielders.

As a football player, Hoss was the team’s starting fullback and punter. He was inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981.
