Resilient Minutewomen rally from nine points down in final minutes to edge Rams
KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts sophomore Hailey Leidel vaulted the Minutewomen into celebration after hitting a layup as time expired, giving UMass a 61-59 victory over Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday at the Ryan Center. The buzzer-beater capped a 7-0 game-ending run for UMass and was set up by a perfectly-timed pass from Bre Hampton-Bey at center court.
The play originated from a sideline inbounds pass after Rhode Island called timeout with the score tied at 59-apiece and 8.1 seconds on the clock. Maggie Mulligan caused a deflection in the paint, setting up Hampton-Bey to grab the loose ball near the baseline and sprint up court before finding Leidel underneath the basket for the game-winner, which left her hand with just one-tenth of a second remaining.
Leidel had a game-high 25 points, turning in her second straight 20-plus point effort and third in her last four games. Mulligan came down with 10 rebounds and Hampton-Bey recorded five steals and five assists, the last of which set up Leidel for her heroics. As a team UMass shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field while the Rams had a 33.3 percent (22-of-66) effort.
The Minutewomen escaped with a narrow edge in rebounds, 42-41 and also capitalized on 14 Rhody turnovers, generating 16 points in return.
Both the first and third quarters took on a back-and-forth nature with eight of the game's 12 lead changes coming in those periods. The former was witness to a strong showing by the Rams on the offensive glass, as URI grabbed seven rebounds to set up eight second chance points.
In the second quarter the teams traded baskets throughout before a Paige McCormick layup beat the buzzer and sent the Minutewomen into the locker room trailing by only one at 28-27.
Rhode Island used an 8-1 run to build momentum in the early stages of the final period. That gave the Rams an advantage of nine, 55-46, before clutch free throws by Hampton-Bey, Leidel and Leah McDerment began the rally effort. Down the stretch Mulligan made a pair from the charity stripe before McCormick evened the score at 59 to lead Rhode Island into the late timeout and precede the game's final sequence.
Nicole Jorgensen was impressive for the Rams in the loss with a double-double on 22 points plus 11 boards. URI was without the services of Jalissa Ross and Maia Moffitt late after both fouled out.
The victory surpasses Massachusetts' season win total from a year ago as the Minutewomen are now 10-11 on the campaign and 2-6 in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island falls to 3-19 and 1-8 against league foes.
UMass now returns to the Mullins Center and hosts Richmond on Field Trip Day, Wed., Jan. 31, in an 11:30 a.m. contest.
