McMahan’s Late Free Throw Lifts Saint Louis Over Women’s Hoops, 64-63

January 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Leidel leads all scorers with 23 points; Hampton-Bey records career-high 13 rebounds

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis' Kerri McMahan hit a free throw with exactly one second remaining in regulation to lift the Billikens over University of Massachusetts women's basketball, 64-63, on Thursday night at Chaifetz Arena.

Hailey Leidel scored a game-high 23 points for the Minutewomen on 8-of-17 shooting and Maggie Mulligan recorded her 27th career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. UMass led for 38 minutes, 33 seconds, but SLU used an 8-0 run over the final 3:20 of the ballgame to steal the victory.

Leah McDerment had five assists for UMass and Hampton-Bey grabbed five steals on the night in addition to a career-high 13 rebounds. Jackie Kemph led the Billikens with 20 points and Jenny Vliet had a double-double of her own, matching Mulligan's linescore of 10 points and 12 boards.

Massachusetts used a 9-2 run out of the gate to set the tone early and build momentum. Leidel drained a 3-pointer from the right wing and Mulligan converted a layup as well as a pair of free throws before Jessica George put down a jumper.

Leidel used a pair of triples in the second stanza en route to closing the half with 11 points. Her second make from downtown gave the Minutewomen a 27-19 lead before the sides traded baskets to enter halftime with UMass ahead 29-22.

Massachusetts built considerable momentum down the stretch of the final 10 minutes, highlighted by a huge 3-point play by Leidel with 3:26 on the clock. In a near carbon copy of that play, Hampton-Bey intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass, drove to the basket for a layup and foul, and converted the free throw that followed. That moved the score to 63-57 in favor of the Maroon and White.

UMass used its final timeout after Kemph hit a game-tying layup with 25 seconds left. With the shot clock off, Hampton-Bey looked to orchestrate some late heroics, but her jumper from just inside the free throw line would not go down. McMahan grabbed the following rebound and drove coast-to-coast before drawing a foul and making the second of her two subsequent free throws.

Although both teams made roughly the same number of field goals, it was SLU that shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) in comparison to 30.3 percent (23-of-76) for UMass.

UMass, which turned the ball over just nine times on the night, forced SLU to cough up the ball 15 times and turned that figure into 16 points. The Minutewomen also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and recorded 17 second chance points as a direct result.

Thursday's setback drops the Minutewomen to 8-10 on the season and 0-5 against Atlantic 10 foes, while the Bills improve to an even 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the A-10.

UMass now faces a quick turnaround and returns home to the Mullins Center for a Sun., Jan. 21 matchup with VCU. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
