AMHERST, Mass. – Eetu Torpström, a 6-1, 181-pound defenseman from Kuopio, Finland, has been added to University of Massachusetts hockey's incoming class for the 2017-2018 season, head coach Greg Carvel announced on Thursday. Torpström becomes the 13th member of the Minutemen's Class of 2021, alongside forwards Austin Albrecht, Marco Bozzo, Mitchell Chaffee, Oliver Chau, Jake Gaudet, Philip Lagunov, John Leonard and George Mika, defensemen Mario Ferraro and Cale Makar, and goaltenders Brad Arvanitis and Matthew Murray.

"When Willy Lagesson decided to sign with the Edmonton Oilers, we needed to add another defenseman to our roster very late in the recruiting process," said Carvel. "Fortunately, we feel like we have found a quality player in Eetu Torpström. Eetu has the size to be a solid defensive defenseman, but also has the ability to move the puck and add to the offense from the blue line. Finnish players all have similar qualities in that they compete hard and play the game the right way while utilizing a nice skill set. It will be interesting to see where Eetu fits into our blue line, as we feel it will be the strength of our team this coming season."

Torpström logged 51 career points on 12 goals and 39 assists over 106 games for KalPa's U20 squad over the span of four seasons (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17), serving as captain during the 2016-17 campaign.

He also played for KalPa at the U18 (2013-14, 2014-15) and U16 levels (2012-13) and saw action with Finland's U19 and U17 squads, as well.
