Baseball Storms Back for Win in Beanpot Consolation Game, 6-5
April 19, 2017 | Baseball
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts baseball used a six-run bottom of the fourth to rally for a 6-5 win over Northeastern in a seven-inning Beanpot Consolation game at Fenway Park on Wednesday afternoon. The victory moves the Minutemen to 9-21 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 16-17.
Northeastern plated a run in its first trip to the plate. Charlie McConnell led off the game with a triple to center and scored on a one-out single up the middle by Cam Hanley.
The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third. Mason Koppens sent a two-out double into left center and Hanley drove him home with a single off the Green Monster before being thrown out at second.
Back-to-back doubles with one out in the fourth pushed the score to 3-0 as Northeastern's Pat Madigan brought Max Burt home.
UMass stormed back, however, scoring all of its runs on the day in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Nolan Kessinger was hit by a pitch and senior Dylan Morris drew a walk before the runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Senior Matt Bare brought in Kessinger with a sacrifice fly to deep center to put the Minutemen on the board. Next, walks to senior Jon Avallone and redshirt sophomore Dylan Robinson set up a bases loaded walk to sophomore Ryan Lever to force in a run. Senior Mike Geannelis then gave UMass the lead with one swing of the bat, driving in three with a double down the left field line. Mrowka followed with an RBI single to plate Geannelis for the Minutemen's sixth and final run.
Northeastern took two of the runs back with a two-out, two-run double from pinch hitter Zach Perry in the top of the fifth, but sophomore Connor Donahue entered from the bullpen and ended the potential comeback with a groundout.
Senior Ryan Moloney entered in the sixth and retired all six batters he faced to pick up his first career save and recording two strikeouts.
Sophomore Casey Aubin started and collected the win (1-1) for the Minutemen, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Brian Rodriguez took the loss (3-2) for Northeastern, letting up three runs on two hits with three walks without registering an out.
UMass finished the contest with seven hits, led by Avallone and Geannelis who both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Minutemen will be back in action this Friday, April 21, when the squad will open its Atlantic 10 series at La Salle with game one of the weekend set for a 3 p.m. start.
