Baseball Walks Off With 5-4 Win Over Saint Louis
April 15, 2017 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. – Down to its final strike, the University of Massachusetts rallied for back-to-back RBI singles to take the series finale against Saint Louis, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 8-20 on the season, 3-6 in the Atlantic 10, while the Billikens fall to 21-11 and 5-5 in conference play.
Saint Louis opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second. Jake Garella drew a leadoff walk and came in following a pair of singles from Trent Leimkuehler and Cole Dubet.
The Billikens then pushed their lead to 3-0 in the third. Parker Sniatynski sent a one-out double down the left field line and James Morisano followed with a two-run homer to left center.
Sophomore Cooper Mrowka put UMass on the board with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left center that brought the Minutemen within two in the bottom of the fourth.
UMass tied the score at three in its next turn at bat. Senior Dylan Morris and junior Keith Linnane reached via a bunt single and an error to begin the inning, while freshman Eddy Hart moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With two away, redshirt sophomore Dylan Robinson bounced a two-run single back up the middle that brought in Morris and Linnane.
Saint Louis responded, however, by retaking the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth. Morisano led off with an infield single and moved to second when the ball was overthrown at first before crossing the plate on a one-out single to right by Garella.
Then in the bottom of the ninth, Hart drew a leadoff walk and Robinson dropped a single into shallow center with one away. With an 0-2 count and two outs, Mrowka drove in Hart with a single to left and the next batter, freshman Nolan Kessinger, knocked a single up the middle to bring in Robinson for the winning run.
Senior Mike Geannelis threw a complete game to pick up the win (3-4) as he allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Billikens' reliever Ryan Lefner took the loss (0-3) after surrendering two runs on five hits, struck out one and walked one.
Six Minutemen had multi-hit days at the plate as the team finished with 13 in the contest. Robinson and Mrowka registered two RBI apiece.
UMass will return to action on Tuesday, April 18, when the squad will travel to UConn for a 3 p.m. contest.
